Job Opening: Programming Coordinator

Cinema Politica is a non-profit exhibition and distribution network for independent political film and video by Canadian and international artists.

Cinema Politica is seeking to hire a Programming Coordinator who will work closely with the Director of Programming and the Executive Director to assist with the coordination of programming activities and acquisition of exhibition and distribution titles. We are interested in applicants who have a specific interest in documentary, independent film and media. This position is an ideal opportunity for a filmmaker, emerging film curator, film scholar or a recent graduate of an applicable degree who is interested in experience in a non-profit media arts organization with a commitment to creativity, activism and social justice. One-week training and regular mentorship will be provided.

This is a part-time contract position (10-14 hours per week) with a possibility of renewal. Remuneration for the position is $18 – $20 per hour based on experience. The selected candidate will start in August 2024 at our Montreal (Quebec) office.

Responsibilities

Impact and Distribution Coordination

  • Scout titles of potential interest to CP Network and invite submissions
  • Research and request titles for acquisition from rights holders and request screeners
  • Pre-screen and process submissions
  • Circulate titles to programming committee and facilitates their work,
  • Track programming status of films and organize feedback
  • Prepare programming meeting lists, coordinate and attend meetings and take notes
  • Communicate with rights holders and provide feedback when requested
  • Maintain a master list of submissions and requests on CP website
  • Maintain a database of distributors and sales agents on CP website

Acquisition

  • Negotiate and secure screening fees with rights holders based on CP fee structure and allocated budget
  • Ensure balance and diversity in programming
  • Process contracts and invoices
  • Manage deliverables, including digital assets, press kits, etc. and handle print traffic
  • Maintain master list of acquisitions via CP website
  • Track number of screenings and request invoicing via CP website
  • Draft communication materials announcing new acquisitions

General

  • Work with Director of Programming to ensure all programing adheres to Cinema Politica’s mandate and curatorial approach and vision
  • Provide regular reports
  • Assist the Network Coordinator with local programming requests
  • Maintain excellent relationships with clients and rights holders
  • Liaise with filmmakers, distributors and CP locals when necessary
  • Participate in staff meetings
  • Work closely with the CP team to complete time-sensitive tasks

Qualifications

  • Experience in media arts programming
  • A degree in Film Studies, Film Production, Media or Fine Arts or relevant work/volunteer experience
  • Strong project management and organizational skills and a talent for multi-tasking
  • Familiarity with Cinema Politica and its activities
  • Good understanding of the non-profit and media arts sectors
  • An understanding and appreciation of the intersection of activism, social justice and media arts
  • Excellent language skills in both English and French
  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office, email, work management software, etc)
  • Strong writing skills
  • Strong knowledge of digital formats
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines
  • Ability to work well individually and in a collaborative environment

Assets

  • Interest and knowledge in documentary, social justice issues and activism
  • Good knowledge of film festivals, production and distribution organizations
  • Experience with video production
  • Adaptable to a flexible work schedule
