Omar Majeed
Omar Majeed is an award-winning director, editor and producer based in Montreal.
Since 2006, he has worked exclusively with one of Canada’s most successful documentary production companies, EyeSteelFilm (Up the Yangtze, Last Train Home, S.P.I.T.) and directed his first feature-length documentary TAQWACORE: The Birth of Punk Islam in 2009. The film chronicles the rise of the nascent Muslim Punk scene in North America and Pakistan. The film played theatrically across North America, and was broadcast domestically and internationally. It recently completed its film festival run, including premieres at South by Southwest, Sheffield Doc/Fest, IDFA and Harlem International, where it took top prize in the World Documentary category. SPIN magazine voted the film one of the ten best music docs of that year.
This year, Omar produced and co-directed another feature film entitled The Frog Princes. This documentary profiles a Montreal-based theatre troupe comprised of young adults with developmental disabilities. The film was broadcast on CBC Montreal, and It will have it’s theatrical local premiere at Cinema Politica (Concordia) on March 26th, 2012.
In addition, Omar edited the feature documentary Inside Lara Roxx, directed by Mia Donovan – and is the process of editing new docmentaries including Buzkashi by Najeeb Mirza and The Fruit Hunters (Discovery Channel) by Yung Chang.
Aside from his work for EyeSteelFilm, Omar has produced television specials for Bravo! and CityTV, acted as the creative director of BookTelevision The Channel and won a Gemini-award for Best Editing on the groundbreaking magazine program QueerTelevision.
