We are very excited to announce that two of our distribution titles, FINDING SALLY by director Tamara Mariam Dawit, and ANOTHER WORD FOR LEARNING by director Jadis M. Dumas, will be screening online at DOXA International Documentary Festival from Thursday, June 18 until Friday June 26. This year’s DOXA International Documentary Festival has been adapted to online viewership, exclusively for British Columbia audiences, as a result of the current pandemic.

FINDING SALLY is an intimate and illuminating film that depicts a family whose archival dig through the past leads them to re-connect and share both pain and loss, love and healing. Sally’s story bridges personal and family narratives with the political history of Ethiopia during the military coup and revolutionary struggle of the 1970s. The Dawit family is implicated in the conflict, as Sally joins the revolutionary struggle in defiance of her father, a high-ranking bureaucrat. Dawit’s searching and deeply introspective narration ties this compelling story together. Today, Ethiopia is going through important political changes once again, and FINDING SALLY sheds light on an under-represented chapter of the country’s living history.

A powerful counter-narrative, ANOTHER WORD FOR LEARNING tells the inspiring story of a young indigenous girl, Aisha, who carves out her own path to education. Her personal desires and cultural heritage compel her to learn outside of imposed state structures. Clever, creative and fierce, the Kwakwaka’wakw girl pulls no punches as she critiques the colonial institutions that seek to fit her into a box she finds un-relatable and unjust at the core.
