About the Film
GRITOS DEL SILENCIO, investigates the issue of gender violence, also known as “Feminicidio”, in El Salvador. Centered around the story of Lazaro Moran, a man seeking refugee status in Canada after his wife is brutally murdered by their godson and his friend, both gang members. Lazaro, and his daughter America, share their story as the film investigates the root causes of this issue, from a woman’s role in the Salvadoran society to the lack of support from the different levels of government.

About the Director

Gerson J. Peña

Gerson J. Peña is a Toronto based Salvadoran writer, filmmaker, activist and sometimes photographer. After completing his 2013 short piece Desde Antes(From Before), Gerson has delved into documentary cinema, completing his first documentary short film Gritos del Silencio (Silent Screams), which looks at gender violence, in his home country of El Salvador, centred around the story of Lazaro Moran, whose wife is murdered by teenage gang members. Gritos del Silencio has been screened at Documentary Tirana Film Festival (DOCUTIFF) 2015, the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival 2015, and the Grand Rapids Feminist Film Festival 2015. Currently, Gerson continues to work in both narrative and documentary cinema.
