Canada – Cinema Politica Distribution is proud to announce that its latest acquisition NOTES ON DISPLACEMENT will have its Canadian premiere on Monday, April 3 at 7PM in Room H-110 at Concordia University, with director Khaled Jarrar in attendance. NOTES ON DISPLACEMENT garnered critical acclaim following its World Premiere at IDFA’s Envision Competition, where it was hailed as “skilfully crafted, with a commendably thorough attention to the whys and hows of migrant/refugee issues” (Neil Young, Screen Daily). This is celebrated Palestinian visual artist and filmmaker Khaled Jarrar’s second feature-length film, and we’re excited to share this powerful story with Canadian audiences from coast to coast to coast.
NOTES ON DISPLACEMENT takes a deep dive into the perilous voyage of migrants crossing the Mediterranean sea —a news topic so often sensationalized by the Western media. With a camera in hand, the director Khaled Jarrar follows a single family on a grueling journey from Syria to Germany, traversing through precarious and life threatening conditions, thronging crowds, dangerous language barriers, and dehumanizing camps. Nadira, an elderly Palestinian, has been a refugee since the age of 12. And now she has to leave Damascus, too. She and her daughter Mona feared for their lives there, but the idea of a safe existence elsewhere is a distant dream.
Filmmaker Khaled Jarrar has his personal reasons for going through this experience in order to eliminate, in his own images, the distance so dominant in Western media coverage. And in a sense he—along with the viewer— becomes a true member of this family.
“As the director from behind the camera I was driven to offer images of our own making, outside the never-ending western paparazzi image onslaught of displaced refugees. This film is for us, our values, our knowledge, our experiences.”
– Khaled Jarrar
NOTES ON DISPLACEMENT is produced by Khaled Jarrar (Jenin Films), Thomas Kaske (Kaske Film), and co-produced by May Odeh (Odeh Films) with the support of the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture, Taawon, and the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development. The film features a score by Pulitzer Prize winner, Grammy nominated, and Guggenheim Fellow, composer Du Yun.
